With more than 100 years of combined industry experience, Choctawhatchee Hauling & Equipment continues a family tradition that is deeply rooted in the land and communities of Walton and Okaloosa Counties for generations. 

Owner Kyle is a fifth-generation land clearer who learned the trade the old-fashioned way—by working alongside family and learning from some of the most respected professionals in land clearing. This includes local legends, Hendal and Carson Sweeney. Through these experiences, Kyle gained not only technical skills but also an understanding of hard work, doing a job right, treating people fairly, and taking pride in the results. 

~ Generations of Land-Clearing History ~

The Sweeney family’s connection to Northwest Florida’s land and timber industry dates back to the early 1900s. 

Matt Sweeney, Kyle’s great-great-grandfather, used a team of oxen to haul timber from the Choctawhatchee Forest—now known as the Eglin Reservation—to the mill on Boggy Bayou. His efforts laid the foundation for a family tradition that would continue for generations. 

In the mid-1900s, Kyle’s great-grandfather, Henry Sweeney, owned Sweeney Construction, where he dug ponds and canals using draglines, built roads, and cleared land throughout Northwest Florida. 

By the late 1900s, Kyle’s grandfather, Hendal Sweeney, owned Hendal Sweeney Hauling & Construction. His legacy is still visible in the area today, with roads built for numerous subdivisions around Niceville, boat launches constructed along the Choctawhatchee River, cleared channels in Alaqua, dug ponds, established foundations for condominiums along the Emerald Coast, and completed countless residential land-clearing projects. 

Kyle began working alongside his grandfather as a teenager. He lovingly refers to him as “PaPaw,” and those formative years were crucial to Kyle’s education and the foundation of his current work. Kyle continues to rely on his PaPaw's wisdom to navigate challenging jobs. Although, PaPaw is retired now, you may still catch him running excavators, bull-dozers, and dump-trucks on a few job sites still today. 

Kyle's great-uncle Carson Sweeney is also a lifelong land clearer who has dedicated decades to projects throughout Northwest Florida. Carson has owned and operated sand pits in the Freeport area, adding depth to the family’s extensive history in land clearing, hauling, materials, and site work. 

Today, Kyle collaborates closely with his PawPaw Hendal and Uncle Carson, drawing on their wealth of experience when tackling projects. These relationships are vital to what distinguishes Choctawhatchee Hauling & Equipment; Kyle doesn’t just lean on modern equipment—he draws from generations of hands-on knowledge and field work.
